Hanoi (VNA) - A cold spell is forecast to hit the northern region on January 15 evening, lowering temperatures of Hanoi and surrounding localities to below 15 degrees Celsius.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, temperatures in the mountainous areas will be between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius. High mountain regions could fall below 8 degrees Celsius.

The cold spell will bring rain to Hanoi in the coming two to three days.

Rain is also predicted in other northern and central localities with the expected daily volume ranging from 30 to 70mm. The mountainous provinces of Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Ha Giang are expected to be engulfed by more than 100mm of rain each day.

The cold spell will cause rough seas and strong winds in the Tonkin Gulf and the northern part of the East Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, the centre said.-VNA
